The Finding
Since the last visit there has been quite an increase in the numbers of employees, but the Training Matrix does not identify this and thus requires updating
Some Context to the Finding
After achieving certification to ISO 9001, the electrical contracting company based in London found that they were successfully bidding for bigger projects, and they were therefore able to grow the workforce.
Although the workforce had grown, they had recruited additional staff without fully evaluting the full range of skills required and had not updated the training matrix to reflect the latest skills available within the organisation. This in turn also meant that they had not considered where protential gaps in skills and knowledge may exist.
Action taken to address the finding
The training matrix was updated.
Training needs were formally reviewed on an ongoing basis.
Job descriptions were reviewed to consider what skills were necessary or desireable for each role.
Lessons to take from this finding
A well maintained training matrix is a valuable document and will help to show where an organisation has strength as well as where additional training needs exist.
Training needs should be kept under regular review.
Using cloud based compliance software can make it really easy to manage training records. In the case of Mango, a simple report can be set up within the skills module. As individual employee training records are updated, the training matrix report is automatically updated, meaning that, with the click of a button, the report can be generated with ease.
