London’s Burning? The West End theatres won’t be thanks to Sicknote and Mango…

Sicknote gasped in exasperation and shrugged.“

I don’t know what to do, Jean. The Station Officer won’t give me the weekend off so I can sing the Pirate King in the Penge Occasional Players production of the Pirates of Penzance,” Sicknote said, slumping down into the armchair.

Jean sighed.

“Well, your understudy will have to do it. What’s so important that you have to be on shift with Blue Watch this weekend?”

Sicknote laughed.

“I have to visit theatres across the West End to talk to them about the importance of Fire Door Prevention Week in September,” he said.

“The irony’s not lost on me, love! While I’m catching the managers of the theatres between the matinees and the evening shows, the Pirate King will be bringing the house down in Penge!”

Jean smiled.

“To be fair, love, you haven’t worked a weekend in months and you’ve been office bound for a while because of your back,” she replied.

Sicknote nodded.

“I know, but why THIS weekend? Anyone would swear the Station Officer is still annoyed about that big bang I caused when my metal detector found that unexploded hand grenade…”

Jean laughed.

“Well, you always say that keeping fire doors maintained well and closed is one of the best ways to help people get out of a fire, don’t you? Now’s the time to spread the word.”

Sicknote opened his laptop and showed Jean the Fire Door Awareness Week website.

“Could buy you an hour in a fire,” he said.

“I’ll be talking to theatre managers about their legal duties and what they need to do to ensure they stay on the right side of the regulations.

“My pal Jodie from Penarth Management also put me into some really useful online compliance software to help them stay legal. It’s called Mango and store everything in the cloud. Works wherever there’s an internet connection.

"Less paperwork hanging around, less of a fire risk! Plus, theatre managers can use it to get ready for Martyn’s Law, the new anti-terror legislation that gives venues like theatres duties to protect public safety.“

"They’ll need to have detailed risk assessments, records of effective staff training, and good communications in case something does happen.”

Jean said: “That’s the law named after Martyn Hett who died in the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, isn’t it?”

Sicknote nodded: “Yes and we expect it to be introduced very soon. Time to get Mango!”

Jean laughed.

“Sounds exotic, love, like something the Pirate King would find on the beach as he buries his treasure…”

Sicknote groaned: “Don’t rub it in, Jean!”
