Victor glared at Pippa.
“It’s all the noise and disruption! We’ve had two vans blocking the cul de sac for
hours now, and I can’t hear Gardener’s Question Time above the inane chatter about
EastEnders…,” he said, barely pausing for breath.
“Then, there was the unfortunate incident with the wheelbarrow and Mrs Warboys.
She was traumatised by falling in it and it careering off down the close like that. They
simply shouldn’t have left it where they did…”
Pippa sighed: “Well, they didn’t leave it on your garden path, Mr Meldrew. You took it
there because you said it was blocking the footpath outside. How were they to know
Mrs Warboys would come out of your front door and not see it?
“Patrick said he was very impressed with the way you caught up to it and held onto
the handles, even when you were being dragged down the hill. A local hero, he
said.”
Victor humphed: “Yes, well, it could have been much worse. What on earth are you
two having done, anyway?”
Pippa replied: “We’re installing solar panels and a heat pump, Mr Meldrew. Patrick
works as a consultant with a solar energy supplier now, and we’ve learned about the
importance of protecting the planet and having renewable energy sources.”
Victor rolled his eyes: “I don’t believe it! All this for a few solar panels? Is it worth it?”
Pippa nodded: “Oh, yes, we’ll save on our bills and it’s part of the theme of this
year’s Earth Day: Our Power, Our Planet. You and Mrs Meldrew should look into it,
too.”
Victor thought about the mess, and spending money, and changed the subject
quickly.
“How is your husband getting on in his new role?”
Pippa smiled: “Oh, marvellously, I think. He’s enjoying it and he’s helping them get
their ducks in a row to comply with environmental legislation and get ISO 14001,
that’s the international standard for the environment too.”
Victor smiled; “Oh, I don’t envy him. All that paperwork…”
Pippa shook her head: “Mango…”
Victor shrugged: “What’s that? Isn’t that the new paint shade Margaret has chosen
for the hall?”
Pippa laughed: “No, it’s online compliance software for their computers, Mr Meldrew.
They can store all their documents in the cloud and do away with paper copies
cluttering up the offices. All you need is an internet connection to access them.”
Victor nodded: “Makes sense, I suppose…”
A furious Margaret stomped out of the house and walked towards them.
“Victor! What on earth are you doing out here chatting with the neighbours? And what
exactly were you doing in the house when you went to help Mrs Warboys?”
Victor replied: “Soaking the roots of the houseplants in the bath before we go on
holiday…”
Victor had a terrible realisation. He’d left the tap running.
“Well, now the bathroom’s flooded and the kitchen ceiling has caved in! You’d better
find a builder right now!” Margaret said.
Victor groaned: “I don’t believe it!”
