Picard looked at the image of Earth on his view screen.
“We’re home, Number One,” he said, smiling slightly.
“That view never gets old, does it?”
Riker smiled: “No, it doesn’t. I remember seeing it in those legendary Artemis images first in school. Imagine being an early 21st century astronaut, looking back at the Earth like that.”
Data turned from the helm: “The first images taken of the Earth from space came from the late 20th century moon missions, Commander.”
Riker nodded: “They did, but the Artemis pictures were the first ones I saw. They inspired me so much that I went on to join the Star Fleet Academy.”
Data nodded: “Images of Earth from space were instrumental in driving many people to join generations of the space programmes. They also inspired many environmental movements. In fact, 21st century Earth had a specific day for highlighting the need to take care of the environment: Earth Day, April 22nd.”
Picard sighed: “Every day should have been Earth Day, Mr Data. We learned hard lessons too late for many species on our planet.
“We’ve spread so far across the galaxy that we sometimes forget how precious our home planet is.”
Data added: “Many 21st century organisations and businesses did take their commitment to the environment seriously. They worked towards obtaining the international standard for care for the environment: ISO 14001. I know because I recently reviewed a file on our computer from an old Earth consultancy, Penarth Management.”
Picard nodded: “Lots of extra paperwork then, I suspect…”
Data shook his head: “No, Captain, they already had Mango.”
Riker laughed: “Fruit salad, fruit cocktail, or real cocktails?”
Data looked confused: “No, Commander, not the fruit. The online compliance software called Mango. The precursor to many compliance systems we use on the Enterprise today. It allowed cloud storage of documents so that users could access them wherever they had an internet connection. Many found it very useful in complying with health and safety, data security, AND environmental regulations and maintaining business continuity.”
Riker laughed again: “The internet! Do you remember that, Captain?”
Picard furrowed his brow: “Exactly how old do you think I am, Number One?”
