Lance looked at Andy in despair.
“This metal detector doesn’t power itself, does it? And how we generate our power
has a massive impact on the planet, doesn’t it?” he said.
He looked out over the rolling green fields and hedges and into the blue sky: “We’ve
got to protect all this, haven’t we?”
Andy nodded in agreement.
“It’s just that £50,000 is a big investment. I know you won the lottery and you have
the money, but what about saving for your old age? What about all the other things
you want to do?” Andy asked.
Lance smiled: “You have to invest big if you think big. And having a future for my
daughter and your little one is more important than buying another TR7 or going on a
cruise with a load of people I’ve never met before.
“This local solar energy company I’m starting will help people get their energy from
renewable sources to protect the places we love. That’s why I’m doing it. I’m starting
with the Danebury Metal Detecting Club home in the scout hut. Terry and Sheila
have got themselves a grant for the work. We’ll be able to charge our detector
batteries with solar energy within months! Sophie and Becky are all for it already…”
They gazed over to the horizon and saw two figures walking towards them. Andy
started humming ‘The Sound of Silence’.
Lance grimaced: “Simon and Garfunkel…”
Philip Peters and Paul Lee stopped in front of them.
“Thought you two didn’t have permission to detect in this field,” Peters said haughtily.
Lance smiled and produced a letter: “Here it is! You thought wrong. I don’t believe Mr
Bishop gave you two AntiquiSearchers permission, though.”
“Dirt Sharks. We’re Dirt Sharks now,” Peters humphed, as they walked away towards
the gate, their detectors slung over their shoulders.
“Antiqui Hunters,” Lee corrected him.
Andy sang: “When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you…”
Lance laughed and added: “It’s Earth Day on April 22, and the theme is Our Power,
Our Planet, so this couldn’t be a more perfect time to launch the company. Becky put
me in touch with her mate Jodie at Penarth Management so I’m getting all the help I
need complying with environmental legislation and going for ISO 14001.”
Andy nodded: “Sounds like you’ve got all the bases covered. Lots of extra paperwork
hanging about in the flat, though, I’d imagine.”
Lance shook his head: “I’ve got Mango.”
Andy asked: “What’s that? Had the TR7 resprayed?”
Lance laughed: “No, it’s online compliance software. No trees die for my records,
Andy. I can keep my records in the cloud and access them wherever there’s an
internet connection. Not here, obviously, as old Bishop won’t have a mobile phone
tower on his land. But the pub, the village hall…the world’s my oyster!”
Andy looked impressed.
“So, does that mean I could try out your top-notch new detector once in a while, now
it’s always fully charged with solar energy?”
Lance glared at him.
“Certainly not! No one but me touches Linda!”
