Steven Toast glared at his agent.
“I’ve had acting jobs on both sides of the Atlantic and you expect me to open a carnival in Devon! Is there nothing else for me? What about that Star Wars thing?” he snapped.
Brooke Hooberman steeled herself as she took a drink from her whisky glass, then replied: “Went to Alan Tudyk.”
Toast grunted: “He gets all the robots! Why can’t you get me a robot?”
Brooke sighed: “Look, Toast, just do this one thing for me and I’ll put you up for a rogue Romulan computer in the next Picard.”
Toast shrugged: “OK, just this once. Why are you involved in some little carnival on the English Riviera?”
Brooke replied: “My daughter’s the organiser. She’s got enough on her plate with all the rules and regulations she needs to comply with, so I said I’d supply some celebrity guests.”
Toast nodded: “Yes, these things are governed by so many laws. Health and safety, environmental, food safety…”
Brooke said: “And the new Martyn’s Law to help protect the public from terrorism. The crowd needs to be protected from attacks like the recent vehicle attacks we’ve seen across the world.”
Toast sighed again: “A sad reflection of what’s been happening. I suspect all that extra paperwork will weigh your daughter down…”
Brooke shook her head: “Mango…”
Toast looked puzzled: “No thanks, I just had lunch…”
Brooke laughed: “No, Toast, Mango the online compliance software. It keeps all the records in the cloud so no piles of paper. And she can access it wherever there’s an internet connection.”
“Sounds marvellous,” Toast said, “but you said celebrities as in plural. Who else have you roped in?”
Brooke passed over a headshot photograph.
Toast gritted his teeth: “Ray ***** Purchase!”
