Terry and June think Mango is blooming marvellous!

Terry Medford took off his Panama hat and sat down at the garden table while his wife June poured tea.

“It’s fantastic news, isn’t it June?”

She smiled weakly and nodded: “Yes, dear. Marvellous.”

Terry went on: “Imagine, the next Royal Horticultural Society flower show in Purley! Think of all the benefits it’ll bring to the borough, and how wonderful it will be for residents like us…”

June sighed: “Yes, dear, but it’s going to entail a lot of work to establish a new major flower show. Think of all the work that goes into Tatton and Chelsea every year.”

Terry smiled: “Just as well yours truly is chairing the planning committee then! Never been afraid of hard work.”

June put down her cup with a little more force than usual: “Retirement was supposed to mean less work and more opportunities for cruising, relaxing, and seeing the grandchildren.

“A major event like this will need so much preparation and you’ll have to abide by countless regulations about health and safety, the environment, fire safety, food safety for vendors, crowd control, and the new law coming in about protecting the public from terrorism.”

Terry sighed: “Yes, Martyn’s Law, where events have a duty to protect the public and ensure they have detailed risk assessments and effective staff training.

“It’s on the statute book now, so it’ll be implemented soon. We’re planning for that and are getting our ducks in a row with our consultants at Penarth Management.

“My old boss at Playsafe Fire Extinguishers and Appliances gave me their details.

“They’re taking us through everything we need to do to comply with the law.”

June sniffed: “The extra paperwork alone will fill up the spare room!”

Terry shook his head: “Oh, June! There won’t be piles of paperwork. We have Mango…”

June shrugged: “Is that for a garden with a tropical theme?”

Terry laughed: “No, online compliance software called Mango. It stores all our documents in the cloud and we can access whatever we need wherever there’s an internet connection.

“We can keep staff training records, risk assessments, crowd control plans, permissions from the council and police all on that system.

“If we need to create an audit trail, it’s so straightforward.”

June said: “Glad to hear it…now, how about you get in some practise and tackle that unruly rose bush? Beautiful floral displays start at home, you know!”
