Simon Casey put the file down on the desk and looked at the school secretary.
“Come on, Liz, we all know you really run things in Summerdown Comprehensive. How many of these health and safety inspection firms do I really need to fill in and file? I don’t believe I need to do ten of each!”
Liz grinned: “I’m sorry, Simon, but each head of department, each deputy head, the head, myself, and the LEA all need a copy. I appreciate it’s a lot of work, but I know that a man of your talents can cope.
“After all, if an unqualified pen-pusher like me can do it…”
Simon’s heart sank. She’d heard about his staff room rant last week. He knew better, but that outside trip permission form problem had really pushed his buttons.
Who’d told her? Brian? Susan? Their self-preservation instincts might have kicked in if Liz had dirt on them.
Liz smiled again: “I can see those cogs turning! Ursula was there in the corner. You just didn’t spot her…”
Simon sighed: “I’m sorry, Liz, I didn’t mean it. And you’re not unqualified…”
Liz nodded: “Yes, well apology accepted…provided you do something for me…”
Simon winced. Whatever it was, it was going to be painful.
“I need you to sort out all five office filing cabinets and make sure the filing system is working properly. I don’t have the time…”
Simon contemplated saying no, but realised how miserable she could make his life.
“Fine, I’ll get Kurt to help me. He’s good with computers and he’ll know if there’s an easier way to do things…”
Liz smiled: “By all means…”

Kurt looked at the paperwork: “This is mad. All of this should be on the computer by now, we’ll have to scan it or input it.
“There’s a new online compliance software the school should be using. It keeps all the records in the cloud and you can access it wherever there’s an internet connection.
“We could keep all our staff training records in it, the certifications for the hearing system and electrics, the food safety certificates, our documents about the environmental and digital safety regulations, and we could use it to comply with Martyn’s Law.”
Simon said: “That’s the new anti-terror legislation for public venues, isn’t it? We’ll need to ensure we have staff training records and detailed risk assessments on file.
“What’s this online compliance software called?”
Kurt replied: “Mango. Like the fruit.”
Simon nodded.
“Don’t think our cookery classes have ever used mango. Sprouts are more our speed!” he said.
