Dan put down his large mug of tea, pushed away his fried eggs, and glared across the cafe table at Jo and Brian.
“You two just don’t understand! I need to get this risk assessment done to impress Emma! She’ll never go out with me if I don’t, and she’ll get into the headteacher’s bad books too…it’s not easy being a deputy head…” Dan sighed and stood up.
“It’s all to do with the new Martyn’s Law that’s going through parliament now and how it will affect the running of the school. We’ll need to know all our duties when it comes to protecting the public under the new law. I don’t know where to start!
“I need to get back…before Dennis convinces the kids to do ‘Alien Planet’ in assembly again…”
Brian nodded: “You remember Nobby’s mate Al?”
Dan tutted: “I don’t have time for Nobby or his mate Al…besides, I still owe Nobby for my car repairs and that meat he got me at Christmas…”
Brian went on: “Al’s a lecturer in the local college. Nothing to do with car repairs or meat sales. He’s been working with Penarth Management to find out what the college needs to do to get ready for the new law. I’m sure they’d be a good place to start, particularly as the details of the Bill are changing during the parliamentary process.”
Dan stopped in his tracks: “Now that might impress Emma! Do you have their contact details?”
Brian pulled his briefcase onto the cafe table, flipped it open, absent-mindedly fiddled with his moustache, then pulled out a business card and handed it to Dan.
“There you go. Ask for Jodie. She’ll help,” Brian said, adding: “Ask her about Mango…”
Dan shrugged: “I’m strictly a banana and strawberries kind of man…”
Brian sighed again: “No, Mango, the online compliance software that helps organisations manage their compliance for all sorts of things - from staff training to boiler annual service certificates. It’s an excellent tool to get ready for Martyn’s Law, too.
“Penarth Management are also part of The Protect Alliance that has a free online seminar on Martyn’s Law for the education sector on March 20 2025.” (Webinar Registration - Zoom)
Dan took the business card and stalked to the door. He turned and looked back: “Thanks, Brian…Jo, why are you dressed as a parrot?”
Jo shrugged: “Meeting Mickey Two Face on the heath, aren’t I? We’re getting ready for Talk Like A Pirate Day so we’re busking for the tourists…”
She stood up and said: “Pieces of eight!” in a loud voice.
The wife of the cafe owner, Shakira, turned her head to look at Jo and shouted: “Oi! Bob’s not having this in his caff! There’ll be no more eggs for you lot!”
Dan, Brian, and Jo muttered sheepishly: “Sorry, Shakira…”
