Friday Night Dinner? Jim’s making a dog’s dinner of Milson’s Christmas present

Jackie put the jumper in her basket and thought: “Adam will love this. Now, where do I find the baby clothes for my new grandchildren?”

She caught sight of herself beaming with pride in the nearby mirror…then saw a familiar face behind her.

“Hello Jackie. You look nice,” Jim said.

Taken aback, Jackie turned to her neighbour and replied: “Oh, hello Jim. Fancy seeing you here…”

“Fancy seeing me here…” he said.

After an awkward silence, Jackie said: “Doing a spot of Christmas shopping, Jim?”

He nodded: “Yes, I’m getting Milson’s present.”

Jackie shrugged: “I didn’t know this shop had a pet department.”

Jim shook his head: “They don’t. Milson insists on matching jumpers on Christmas Day. It’s a little tricky. Milson is a different size to Wilson, so he has to have a new one to match this…”

Jim pulled a red and green jumper with a cat in a Santa hat on it from his bag.

“It’s got a cat on it, Jim. Doesn’t Milson have a problem with cats?”

Jim nodded: “Yes. I tell him it’s a guinea pig. He likes those.”

Aunty Val walked from behind the counter in the shop’s uniform.

“Can’t get used to all this polyester, Jackie. Needs must after the divorce, though, eh?” she said.

“I’ve spent all morning under a mountain of paperwork. Learning about compliance for food safety, health and safety, environmental rules, and this new anti-terror legislation that’s coming in soon, Martyn’s Law. This place will have a duty of care to the public under it and we’ll have to do staff training and have a detailed risk assessment.”

Jim said: “Quite right…”

Val shrugged: “I agree, and thank heavens we have a new computer system to manage it going live next week. It takes all the documents and stores them in the cloud…”

Jim said: “The cloud…”

He looked up to the ceiling, confused.

Jackie said: “You’ll be able to access that wherever you have the internet. And no more mounds of paper. Sounds good…”

Val nodded.

“It does. And it’s called mango which is one of my favourite cocktail ingredients!”

She and Jackie laughed. Val looked at Jim’s jumper and said: “Aisle eight, Jim, towards the back.”

He smiled: “Thank you, Valerie. Do you have it in dog large?”
