Mother’s voice boomed across the Christmas market…
“Timothy!”
He flinched and looked around in embarrassment.
“Can’t take her anywhere!” he said to the German sausage seller, completing his purchase.
Mother waved him over to a stall selling Belgian chocolates.
“These are the ones I want to open on Christmas morning,” she said, loudly.
Timothy laughed awkwardly.
“Tell your father. He’s over there getting quietly sozzled on mulled wine.”
Timothy asked: “Gluhwein?”
Mother replied: “Language, Timothy! Make sure he gets them.”
Timothy nodded: “Yes, Mother.”
She clasped her handbag to her stomach: “Tell me again why this market is safer than the ones where we’ve seen the attacks.”
Timothy sighed: “Now you know all this. The organisers of this market use an excellent system to ensure they comply with health and safety, and they’re already well on the way to complying with the new anti-terror legislation, Martyn’s Law.”
Mother nodded: “Named after that lovely young man who died in the Manchester Arena bombing?”
Timothy nodded: “Yes, Martyn Hett. It’s something his mother led the campaign to get into law.”
Mother nodded: “I remember.”
Timothy went on: “There are bollards and barriers here, you see trained security staff, and there’s the manager co-ordinating everything. They use an online compliance system in the cloud to manage everything.”
Mother sighed: “I still don’t understand how it can be in the clouds, but I take your word for it as a librarian who researches things.”
Timothy shrugged: “Mango…”
Mother replied: “No, dear, we’ll need cranberries and clementines.”
Timothy laughed: “No, the online system is called Mango. It saves so much time and cuts down on the piles of paperwork event organisers need to store.
“It’s also available wherever there’s an internet connection.”
Mother smiled: “Hmmm…That reminds me, I need to use my time wisely and get some of that lovely Wensleydale cheese with cranberries in it…”
She stomped off. Father arrived.
“Which one is it, then?” he asked, looking at the chocolates.
“The usual,” Timothy replied.
