OHSAS18001 Health and Safety Systems
|
Every business is required by law to comply with health and safety regulations. These are different for every type of work and if you need help we can offer three options:
- To write a Health and Safety Policy suitable for your business. This sets out your objectives and usually makes a commitment to exceed the basic legal requirements. If you employ five or more people, by law you must at the least:
- have a written Health & Safety Policy, which must be kept up-to-date.
- have written risk assessments.
- display statutory Health & Safety notices.
- To prepare a Health and Safety Manual together with a review of your policies and arrangements.
- To achieve OHSAS18001; this is the assessable standard that complements the ISO9001 Quality Assurance and the ISO14001 Environmental standards.
For OHSAS18001 we typically:
- Check that your management systems provide a structure for complying with occupational health and safety requirements and name those responsible for implementation and adherence.
- Research and write the list of relevant Statutory Legislation and make sure you have a suitable sign-posting system in place so that staff know what applies.
- Ensure you have the resources to carry out risk assessment properly and that managers know how to perform assessments going forward.
- Make sure safety committees function properly and that communication is adequate.
- Look at emergency plans, fire alarms and general hazards.
- Check that legal compliance is being maintained.
- Decide whether any additional Procedures are required, and help write them.
- Make sure the accident investigation system is working effectively.
- Extend the Quality and Environmental auditing system to embrace Health and Safety.
- Carry out an audit of key areas immediately prior to Assessment.
- Liaise with the assessing body to co-ordinate the assessment with Quality and Environment surveillance visits.
- Be available at the time of the Assessment to support the management team.
- Assist with any corrective actions identified during the Assessment.
Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP)
Companies in the construction sector are often required to comply with a whole raft of safety schemes such as CHAS, Constructionline, etc. It is now possible to use OHSAS18001 as a means to being able to demonstrate compliance to any of the schemes that form part of SSIP.
This is great news, as it now means that certification to OHSAS18001 via certain UKAS accredited certification bodies, is just one way of demonstrating compliance. This cuts down on the number of applications to be completed, and of course, the cost of doing so.
Penarth Management commits itself to assist the company from the start of work to the day of the Assessment and beyond. Contact us via info@penarth.co.uk or 029 2070 3328 to find out how we may be able to help you with this!
