ISO9001 - Quality Management Systems
The team at Penarth Management Limited is experienced at assisting print companies to implement management systems. Our print clients include large national newspaper printers to small family run businesses. We have supported printers using digital and lithographic technology.
We understand that having captured details of the job, the relevant information needs to be communicated; the right type and size of paper (or other material) needs to be ordered and set up; print jobs need to be properly scheduled; printed products need to be checked for quality; finishing processes need to be applied and products need to be appropriately packaged.
We recognise that normally the main reason print companies decide to implement a formal Quality Management System to meet the requirements of ISO9001, is because of a customer requirement to do so.
Within the print industry, regardless of the technology being employed, the principle concept of 'plan, do, check, act' remains the same.
ISO14001 - Environmental Management Systems
Environmental issues within the print industry typically include paper (including whether it is sourced from sustainably managed forests, or whether it contains recycled content), wastes (which may include the disposal of aluminium plates as scrap) and emissions from solvent based inks.
Naturally site specific conditions will also need to be taken into account (e.g. proximity of nearby rivers or Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) etc).
In order to demonstrate effective control of these issues, it is good practice to implement an Environmental Management System that meets the requirements of ISO14001.
OHSAS18001 - Health and Safety
The print industry is widely recognised as having a high rate of skin disorders such as dermatitis which is generally caused by repeated exposure to hazardous substances; muscular skeletal disorders caused by poor manual handling techniques; slips, trips and falls etc. Further information can be found via the Health & Safety Executive's (HSE's) print pages.
Other issues, such as noise, may also exist. Such matters may necessitate the introduction of formal health surveillance measures.
A structured Health and Safety Management System that meet the requirements of OHSAS18001 can help to ensure that controls are properly implemented.
FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody
Within the print industry there is a growing demand for paper to be sourced from sustainably managed forests. Some clients may be satisfied with knowing that the materials or products they are purchasing carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) logos. However, for those printers working on behalf of large corporate clients, there is a growing demand to demonstrate full Chain of Custody.
Though evidence of formal FSC or PEFC systems is generally required to demonstrate that paper based products have been sourced ethically, with minimal impact on the environment, a Chain of Custody system is fundamentally one of quality control. Specific examples of the controls required include ensuring that suppliers are aware of the need to supply FSC or PEFC branded paper; management of incoming reams or reels of paper; stock control; proper labelling and proper documentation control (including invoicing and even the correct use of the logos).
