Quality Assurance for Architects

A busy provincial architect's practice that integrates the restoration of historic buildings with new-build schemes for property developers, has one division of the practice that adheres to conventional design methods and another division that designs almost exclusively using CAD and electronic forms of communicating with the client and with the construction company.

A Quality Management System was developed that met the requirements of ISO9001:2000 without imposing uniformity of working practices and methods of the professional architects and engineers or of the support staff. Accredited assessment was achieved within 6 months and the Principal has since said "ISO9001:2000 has enabled us to win valuable work from Local Authorities and the public sector".

Cesspits, Sludge and the Environment

A well established company who have been cleaning drains and emptying septic tanks for some years, have expanded their business to include a new plant that separates the waste they collect into a dry cake and cleanses the fluid content until it is fit to be released into the town drains under licence from the Environment Agency.

We prepared the Environmental Management System which includes the CCTV examination of drains, drain repairs, the mobile collection service and the plant for processing waste. They have now achieved accredited certification to ISO14001:2004. We were also involved in their IPC consent and are retained to advise on compliance with EA regulations.

Environmental and Health and Safety bolt on

A company that provides interior landscaping including real and replica plants for offices, shopping malls and car showroom has had accredited ISO9001 certification for several years. They resolved to meet the Environmental Standard ISO14001:2004 and the Health and Safety Standard OHSAS18001 and started at Easter 2005. By 31st August we had integrated their management system and their existing certification body has provided independent certification to all three Standards in September 2005.

An interesting spin off was that we slimmed the Quality Management System sufficiently to ensure the on-going auditing and maintenance of all three systems was no more onerous than the former Quality Assurance auditing in the past.

Evaluation of Legal Compliance

Clause 4.5.2 of ISO14001: 2004 requires companies to evaluate compliance with the legal requirements that apply to the company. We have been asked to help various clients do this. In the case of one plastics manufacturer, we were asked to carry out an in-depth assessment of their compliance with the IPPC permit. More recently, we undertook a comprehensive audit of the legal requirements associated with a major chemical manufacturer in North Wales.

In both cases we found that the companies concerned had to implement corrective actions in order to comply with current legislation and we therefore have probably helped them to avoid costly fines!

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point

A specialist firm in interior and garden design opened their new store in July 2005. In addition to providing customers a place to buy 'out of the ordinary' home and garden products - the new store offers customer a chance enjoy coffee, lunch or even a glass of champagne in its new café.

We conducted a full hazard analysis of the foods prepared by the café and provided them with a set of Good Hygiene Procedures to follow in order to prepare safe and hygienic food. Since July, the café has been following our procedures and have been monitoring and recording critical stages in food preparation - including storage temperatures, cooking temperature etc. By following our HACCP Plan and Good Hygiene Procedures, the café is now following all legislation required for handling food.

Basic Food Hygiene Training

A company that provides food vending services have recently made a huge investment in food safety training. Penarth Management ran a 6 hour Basic Food Hygiene session in July for all its food handlers. They were given basic training on topics such as food law, food preparation, food poisoning and temperature control. The Basic Food Hygiene course is interactive - providing staff with an excellent opportunity to contribute and raise questions relating to their work.

All candidates passed the examination and now hold the Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene, issued by the Royal Institute of Public Health.
